An HPSG analysis of non-integrated wh-relative clauses in German
نویسنده
چکیده
In this article, the so-called wh-relative clause construction is investigated. The German wh-relative clauses are syntactically relevant as they show both, root clause and subordinate clause properties. They matter semantically because they are introduced by a wh-anaphor that has to be resolved by an appropriate abstract entity of the matrix clause. Additionally, the wh-relative clause construction is discourse-functionally peculiar since it evokes coherence. Besides these interesting empirical characteristics, whrelatives raise important theoretical questions. It is argued that the standard HPSG theory has to be extended to account for non-restrictive relative clauses in general, and to cope with the particular properties of the whrelative construction.

متن کاملComplementiser Phrase: The Case of English Wh-Embedded Clauses
English main-clause wh-questions form complementiser phrases with wh-words preposed to spec-C position. This is because English wh-words, as verb-complements originally, are strong enough to trigger wh-movement and auxiliary inversion. Persian EFL learners encounter an over-differentiation problem regarding the acquisition of auxiliary inversion rule in English standard questions. Once they hav...
متن کاملAn HPSG-Analysis for Free Relative Clauses in German
At the moment there is no theory for free relative clauses in German in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994). From GB literature on the subject it is known that free relative clauses behave partly like noun phrases. They can fill argument positions of verbs. And although they are finite sentences, they are serialized like noun phrases in the Germa...
متن کاملVerb Second by Underspecif ication
The paper presents an HPSG analysis of Verb Second (V2) in German by underspeciication, making use of a categorial type hierarchy. We begin by discussing some shortcomings of the HPSG analysis of V2 by lexical rule in Kiss/Wesche(1991), which can be remedied by integration of the concept of functional categories, originally introduced in HPSG by Netter(1994). Based on these insights, and largel...
متن کاملNon-Restrictive Relative Clauses in Construction Based HPSG
This paper presents an account of English non-restrictive (‘appositive’) relative clauses (NRCs) in the framework of ‘construction based’ HPSG. Specifically, it shows how the account of restrictive relative clause constructions presented in Sag (1997) can be extended to provide an account of the syntax and semantics of NRCs and of the main differences between NRCs and restrictive relatives. The...
